Korea’s KT isn’t the first company to envision a smartphone that can transform into a notebook or tablet with the addition of a docking station. The Motorola Atrix 4G already has a laptop dock, and the upcoming Asus Padfone will be able to turn into a tablet. But this week KT is showing off a concept device that can do both of those thins… and more.
The company’s KT Spider concept features an Android smartphone with a 4.5 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. You can use it as a standalone phone or make it the brains of a larger device.
There’s a laptop dock with a space cut out where touchpad would normally be, allowing you to use the phone as a touchpad.
KT’s tablet dock has a cut out on the back for the phone, effectively acting like a magnifying glass for the phone by blowing the contents of the 4.5 inch display up to a 10 inch screen.
Finally there’s a gaming dock that looks a bit like a Sony Playstation Portable without the screen. Just drop the phone into the middle and use the buttons on the left and right to get your game on.
It’s no all-in-one modular device like the Bento concept computer, but while the Bento only exists in rendered images, the KT folks have gone a step further and actually produced working prototypes. The finished products may be available in Korea in November or December.
