Toshiba goes head-to-head against Apple with tablet and ultrabook

Summary: Can Toshiba compete against Apple by going super-skinny?

Toshiba is hoping to grab some attention (and possibly some customers from Apple) by releasing an Android-powered tablet and a slim ultrabook.

Toshiba made the announcement at the IFA trade show in Berlin, Germany.

The tablet, called the AT220, is powered by the Android ‘Honeycomb’ OS, features a 10.1-inch display which sports a 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution and is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. But what sets the AT220 apart from other tablets is how thin it is - 0.3-inch/7.7mm thin, thinner than both the iPad 2 (8.8mm) and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (8.6mm).

Thin, it seems, is in!

Toshiba is also jumping onto Intel’s Ultrabook bandwagon with the Portégé Z830.

Lots of cool stuff on the Z830:

  • 13.3-inch HD LED screen
  • 128GB solid state drive
  • Backlit keyboard which is spill-resistant
  • HDMI
  • USB 3.0
  • Gigabit Ethernet

The Z830 is also super-skinny at 0.6-inch/15.9mm.

Both devices will ship during the fourth quarter of 2011. No details have been given on pricing.
