Summary: While flash storage is the norm in the tablet world, Archos’s upcoming GP tablets feature hard drives of the spinning sort. But will that detract from their appeal?
Archos is finally realeasing some of the final details of its upcoming pair of G9 tablets, the 8-inch 80 G9 and 10-inch 101 G9.
Arriving September 30th, the G9 series’s biggest pull is its upgradable hard drive, which caps out at 250 GB. The 10-inch version features a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, while its smaller counterpart comes in both 1 GHz and 1.5 GHz forms. Both devices feature HDMI-out, skin-less Android 3.2, Wi-Fi, and 3G via the Archos G9 3G Stick.
Of course, the biggest concern with the devices are clearly their hard drives. Rather than strictly offer a flash storage-based tablet, Archos decided to run with regular old spinning disc-based hard drives as well. This is a problem because spinning hard drives add size and weight while typically decreasing battery time — all of which create a less than favorable portable device.
Hard drive concerns aside, the G9 tablets seem like a pretty good deal. The 8-inch model starts at $299, and the 10-inch version is priced at $399. Pre-sales start September 20th.
