Intel reports solid financial results

PC processor maker Intel reported solid earnings today in its latest financial results. For the quarter that ended on June 30, the company stated in a press release that it brought in $13.1 billion in revenue, up 22 percent from the same period a year ago. It also beat Wall Street predictions of $12.8 billion. It's a new record in terms of revenue for Intel and also the fifth consecutive quarter that Intel has generated new records for its revenue.

In terms of profits, Intel recorded net income of $3.2 billion for the quarter, up 10 percent from the same period a year ago. Intel is also predicting that it will generate $14 billion in revenue in the current quarter that ends September 30.

Some of the more interesting numbers in the financial report was that Intel's sales in the PC client group were actually up 11 percent in the last quarter compared to the same time period a year ago. This would seem to go against the slow growth in overall PC sales that have been reported by other organizations. However, Intel's low powered Atom processor and chipset division only brought in revenues of $352 million, down 15 percent from the same period a year ago. Atom processors have been used in many netbooks but it's possible that sales of netbooks as a whole have been affected by the surge in popularity of Apple's iPad tablet. Apple recorded sales of over 9 million iPads in the last quarter.
