Christopher Dawson grew up in Seattle, back in the days of pre-antitrust Microsoft, coffeeshops owned by something other than Starbucks, and really loud, inarticulate music. He escaped to the right coast in the early 90's and received a degree in Information Systems from Johns Hopkins University. While there, he began a career in health and educational information systems, with a focus on clinical trials and related statistical programming and database modeling. This focus led him to several positions at Johns Hopkins, a couple-year stint in private industry, teaching high school math and technology, and 2 years as the technology director for his local school district. Most recently, he started his own consulting business and is now the Vice President of Marketing for WizIQ, Inc., a virtual classroom and learning network provider. He lives with his wife, five kids (yes, 5), 2 dogs, and a hateful cat in a small town in north-central Massachusetts. Although he is no longer teaching, his roles with WizIQ and ZDNet allow him to continue helping students and teachers add value to education with technology rather than merely adding to the bottom line.

Following a successful test run in Portland, Google Offers is bringing its Groupon-style local business deals to customers in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area. And the Google Shopper 2.0 Android app has been updated with a “Today’s Offer” tab to buy and redeem coupons from the mobile device.
According to Google’s blog entry, the inaugural offers in each city are:
Pommes Frites, Azya Wine and Chocolate Bar, and Tonnie’s Minis for New York City.
Bob’s Donut and Pastry Shop in San Francisco and Le Bateau Ivre Restaurant in Berkeley.
The updated Google Shopper 2.0 app will not only have the aforementioned “Today’s Offer” tab, but also contain GPS-based local deals for users who aren’t subscribed to Google Offers daily e-mails. Any deals purchased on your phone will show up on the app as well as the main Google Offers site.
“Next up, we’ll be heading to Austin, Boston, Denver, Seattle and Washington, D.C.,” says Google. And app-wise, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw some kind of integration with recent Google acquisition Punchd’s loyalty card technology coming soon.
And on a personal note, I can say with authority that both Pommes Frites and Bob’s are some of the best junk food that each city has to offer. If you try either thanks to Google Offers, let me know what you thought in the comments.
