Targeting and analytics service from Simulmedia gives advertisers and agencies more accuracy in reaching viewers, by leveraging Big Data and applying "web-like advertising techniques" to television.

TV viewers are watching more than ever - 34 hours per week, but the way they watch TV is changing. To better optimize advertising across multiple channels and lower ratings, Simulmedia’s ad targeting and analytics service leverages Big Data. Their targeting strategy applies Internet-style data analysis to traditional TV, recommending show campaigns to marketers and agencies. Combining data from set-top boxes, as well as data from Nielsen, MRI, the US Census and other sources, Simulmedia targets ads according to demographic relevance without storing personal information. The data is processed through algorithms to predict which viewers will watch what, and they monitor how effective these campaigns are by measuring the engagement of targeted viewers.
Changing viewership patterns makes targeting even more important for marketers
As audience fragmentation has occurred, it has become indispensable for advertisers to find where they can most effectively reach their target viewers, so metrics must be more exhaustive. Big Data can crunch together datasets to better reveal what the viewers that they want to reach are watching. The data comes from several viewing sources, including cable, satellite, telco and TiVo boxes, which is licensed anonymously through the TV system operators. Currently, Simulmedia captures data from over 100 million viewing events and sees 500,000 national TV ads per week. While they launched with TV promotional advertisers, they have since expanded to work with travel, financial services, telco and entertainment industry advertisers.
Big Data can provide marketers with high-value viewers in unexpected places
Simulmedia’s targeting can apply to different capabilities, such as demographics like age and gender, plus several other targeting types, such as MRI - shopping behavior and household income, Tune-in Behavior - past viewing of programs, networks or timeslots and Ad Viewing Behavior - “exposure to complementary or competitive ad schedules.” This targeting can result in less cost within ad campaigns and more thorough coverage of a certain audience. As a client remarked about identifying underserved audience pockets with Simulmedia, “It wasn’t about getting a specific demographic... It was about finding viewers predisposed to watching a police drama.”

Big Data is critical to business success, but many projects to implement it stall or remain incomplete. In order to successfully implement Big Data in a company, businesses must first integrate it to company culture.

Big Data is a major topic for decisions makers. 81 percent of CIOs list “Big Data/Advanced Analytics Projects” in their Top 5 2013 IT priorities*. However, less than half of Big Data projects get actually completed in US companies - and that excludes the projects that do not implement all objectives. As the ability to gain insights from huge amounts of information becomes more central to business strategizing, creating a culture that supports these projects will become more vital. A report from Infochimps and SSWUG.org,“CIOs & Big Data”shows how enterprise technology and enterprise culture must be integrated as never before to productively incorporate Big Data and remain competitive.
A communication problem between CIOs and the IT staff
Central to this integration is reconciling the disconnect between overall project vision and those whose role is to implement it - communication must improve between CIOs or managers and IT staff. And indeed, the lack of dialogue between higher level technical staff and IT departments would appear to be an issue for enterprises. Since this is a relatively new business tool, many companies are faced with a talent gap, where they must educate and understand platforms and other Big Data project challenges before starting. The top reasons that these projects fail are “Lack of Business Context Around the Data” and “Lack of Expertise to Connect the Dots.”
Effective Big Data implementation insight is available from IT staff
On the other hand, IT staff offer an “invaluable perspective” when it comes to the process of developing technology projects, according to Infochimps CEO Jim Kaskade. This perspective can give CIOs indication of where they should invest. For instance, the study show that IT staff prefer to focus on front-end difficulties such as processing, analyzing and ongoing management of Big Data, rather than back-end issues. While many companies initially want to develop their own infrastructure, it can drain so much time and resrouces that 61 percent of respondent are actually willing to consider managed remote solutions. These findings show how important it is to realistically approach Big Data and know what to outsource and what to do in-house.

Frictionless communication, key to the adoption of "social care"?

Social care startup Twelephone connects companies to customers through browser-based chat. With a simple link or web widget, companies can receive calls without customers downloading any software. Reducing friction for brand-customer interaction might be key in the adoption of social care.
As the “social care” trend continues to grow, customers will be expecting companies to provide prompt and full-featured customer service via social networks. One startup that hopes to provide for these companies is Twelephone, which gives corporate Twitter users a way to voice or video chat with their customers. When a customer has a problem, question or comment regarding a company’s product or service, they may soon find an @mention from that company with a link to a chat session that takes place within their browser. Twelephone works through the WebRTC project, “which enables Web browsers with Real Time Communications capabilities via simple Javascript APIs” and HTML5.
Direct interaction with customers through Twitter
Customers receive the Twelephone link from a company that they have contacted or posted about, and by clicking it they enter a peer-to-peer communication session. These conversations are private and encrypted, and available in high-definition. Companies install an extension that manages Twitter presence and routes inbound calls, with their Twitter handle serving as their Twelephone number. The WebRTC functionality is currently available for Chrome, but plans to expand to Firefox and Opera. With Twelephone integration, customers can see a Call option directly on the Twitter profile page.
Reducing barriers for brand-customers interaction
Users, or customers, do not need to install the Twelephone Chrome extension in order to use their service. All they need is the link they receive from a company (or that may be in the company Twitter profile or stream), or to use the CallMe widget on the corporate website. So the adoption barrier relies mostly on Twelephone clients, in respect to their willingness to install the Chrome browser or the speed of WebRTC deployment to other browsers. The Chrome extension is necessary for clients to use the service to receive calls, as well as other features. Company call receivers will see incoming calls with Twitter usernames, if available, and will soon be able to use more robust features, such as multiple call distribution.

The growth of mobile has now reached the point where it is inextricable from the larger digital economy. For 2013, mobile payments should be one of the biggest breakthroughs in the field.

With the number of mobile subscriptions fast approaching the human population in 2013, mobile is becoming a mainstream driver of business productivity and social interaction. The next generation of faster network speeds is making mobile broadband more available in order to further this growth and consumption of data. The Mobile Industry Predictions Survey from tech and strategy consulting firm Chetan Sharma asked app developers, startup entrepreneurs, and infrastructure, device and mobile operator industry players about the most notable relevant events that occurred last year or can be expected to arise in the year to come. Among these predictions, the biggest breakthrough for mobile is expected to be in payments.
Mobile payments are expected to be disrupted…
Nearly 35 percent of respondents believe that mobile payments will be a breakthrough category in 2013. Besides the expected impact of payments, 31 percent believe that cloud services be the biggest breakthrough in mobile this year. Nearly 30 percent support mobile commerce, 27 percent are for big data, and connected services have about 26 percent of the vote. Expanding the outlook from breakthroughs to newsworthy developments, most plan to follow the continued growth of global mobile data. Other hot topics are the continued competition between Google and Apple, as well as mobile devices’ (both tablets and smartphones) growing dominance in computing.
…And to be most likely dominated by financial corporations rather than tech companies
Industry leaders overwhelmingly expect financial companies such as VISA to dominate mobile payments in growing numbers; from 30 percent in 2011 to 39 percent in 2013. Nobody else came close in presence than that, but PayPal has 13 percent support for presence in 2013. There are many others that are expected to have a small presence in the new year for mobile payments: operators like Isis, startups, and Google. Amazon and Apple did not have any impact on this area in 2011, but entered the scene in 2012 and are both expected to grow this influence this year, though they only have 11 and 6 percent of support from those surveyed, respectively.

Smartphone owners lead the adoption of mobile heath

Smartphone ownership encourages people to research health or download wellness apps. Besides key demographics that increase mobile health engagement, medical events or conditions are a key growth driver.

Much of the growth in the digital health industry has been within mobile, mobility being very valuable for all the different stakeholders in this area. But adoption is different among cell phone owners and the sub-category of smartphone owners, the ladder leading the way. A Pew Internet research on mobile health shows that 85 percent of adults own a cell phone, half of these own smartphones, which increase the possibilities for Internet access and application usage. 31 percent of regular cell phone owners have used their phone to research health information with their handset, which is nearly double that of two years ago (17 percent). But smartphone owners look for health information through their phones much more often - 52 percent, compared to 6 percent of non-smartphone owners.
Usage of mobile health services depends on context
Usages vary depending on context and demographics. Latino or African American groups, those between the ages of 18-49, and those with a college degree or higher are all more likely to use their phone to gather health information. Some groups also use text messages related to health more often than others: women, those between 30 and 64 years old, and smartphone owners. Besides demographics, people most often engage with mobile health when they are more likely to be involved with health-related situations. Typically, health changes within the last twelve months increase the likelihood of a smartphone owner to download a health app.
Smartphone owners more often download health apps than use medical texts
Although 80 percent of general cell phone owners use text messages to communicate, only 9 percent use them to get health related information. Caregivers, patients with chronic conditions, or people who have faced a medical crisis or a significant health change are more likely to receive medical information via text. However, health applications are generally more popular than text messages. 19 percent of smartphone owners have installed an app that relates to exercise, diet or weight. As of April of this year, 84 percent of smartphone owners have downloaded a health or wellness app. For health apps, the demographics skew towards women, those under 50 years old, and those with a household income over $75,000.

Companies have a choice for devices in the workplace - employee or corporate owned

The weaknesses of BYOD have brought another model of corporate owned, personally enabled devices. But concerns can be addressed by security and efficiency software services as well.
Corporate environments have often provided employees with dedicated devices in the past, but the strengthening of the consumer electronics movement has influenced that recently. Employee-owned laptops, smartphones or tablets may be just as powerful as the ones that the company would be providing for them. So companies began allowing workers to bring their own devices, known as the BYOD trend. Devices are consumer-purchased and supported by the enterprise IT department. But there are caveats to BYOD - due to outside devices accessing corporate data, security concerns began to develop, as well as the possibility of increased IT costs.
Corporate devices managed by employees
So a new choice is emerging for employees to use connected gadgets within the workplace, known as corporate owned, personally enabled, or COPE. In contrast to BYOD, where employees bring in their own devices to use for enterprise functions, COPE is purchased by the organization and managed by employees. COPE enables businesses to set functions and permissions on an ad hoc basis, allowing greater control over device activity. In addition to the more robust security that COPE can provide, it can save money for businesses and employees. Employees often are reimbursed for these more restricted-use devices, and companies can get better prices for the order of multiple units.
Or third party software to secure personally owned devices
BYOD continues to be supported by third-party developers, who try to answer companies’ concerns about data protection. For instance, app management platform Apperian enables brands to secure several different mobile operating systems with business app services. The platform keeps employee personal information and corporate apps and data separate, helping to assuage security and privacy concerns. Apperian incorporates app inspection, which scans for malware and data leaks. The security restricts certain higher-risk activities, such as copy and paste, as well as only lets approved apps access the corporate network.

Massive Open Online Courses: new recruiting opportunities for companies?

Emerging education startups like Udacity are popularizing a new type of online class called an MOOC. As it targets massive amounts of students and claims to be sustainable, it might open new opportunities for companies to find talents online.
Online education, once deemed the territory of for-profit colleges and ambivalent students, has been transitioning to mainstream use with its adoption within the university system. In another step in its evolution, we now see the adoption of the massive open online course, or MOOC. The general definition of a MOOC is that it is open and scalable - free to participate, no registration or institutional affiliation necessary, and often designed to support a “massive” number of students. One evangelist of MOOCs, Sebastian Thrun, co-founded Udacity with 2 other roboticists. This startup aims to offer university-level education that began with their first class, “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence.” As MOOCs seem to be finding sustainable business models, they could also represent new recruiting opportunities for companies.
Open courses for massive amounts of students
The Palo Alto-based education site now offers 14 free classes, and supports a community of over 112K students and instructors. Udacity’s current course offering is centered around computer science, math and science, but their diverse hiring strategy indicates future classes in everything from geography to English and philosophy. With the possibility of low cost and location-independent education being supported by a growing group of members, its possible that MOOCs will become a viable sector within the education system.
New recruiting opportunities for companies?
Udacity also offers a partner company program, where high tech companies or recruiters can access student resumes. This program is free for students, and places them in IT- or development- related positions. Udacity has built a system that distinguishes high achieving students on a scale of distinction that can boost their candidacy. While classes are free to take, Udacity has constructed some paid features into its business model. Students can certify their skills online or at an in-person testing center for a fee. Udacity has partnered with Pearson VUE to provide these testing services, which are in over 170 countries.

Harnessing Big Data to “Address the Pressing Issues of our Time”

The enormous volumes of data people generate could help humanity as a whole to get a better grasp of such problems as the increasing scarcity of resources by increasing our knowledge of the way things work on a local and individual level.
Real-time access to data collected by satellites and billions of sensors, radio frequency identification (RFID) labels, cameras and GPS-enabled smartphones could help mankind to grasp, analyse and then address some key existential issues. This is the idea behind the Human Face of Big Dataprogramme, as explained at ‘Mission Control’ events in London, New York and Singapore on 2 October. This multimedia participatory project, initiated by photographer Rick Smolanand sponsored by EMC²,a data management products and services company,is based on the crowdsourcing approach. First of all a mobile app is being used to collect basic data on how people move about and to put more personal questions to volunteers. All this information will then be made freely available, for example enabling companies or NGOs to obtain a better grasp of basic societal problems and address them more effectively. The aim of the project is to see how enormous volumes of data can nowadays be gathered, analysed, and visualised in real time. The ultimate goal is to draw real benefits from Big Data by getting close to people’s day-to-day lives and improving the general response to issues in society, such as addressing the increasing scarcity of resources, forecasting and providing alerts on climate-related disasters, regulating traffic and improving people’s behaviour.

Making sense of huge data harvest

Dave Menninger, Head of Business Development and Strategy at EMC Greenplum, a division of EMC², told L’Atelier that “the Human Face of Big Data concept is not about the size of the project but the insights people can get from the data being created and packaged.”  Rick Smolan, the project initiator, points out that everyone carrying a smartphone has become a human sensor, part of the central nervous system for the planet.  “Our increasing ability to sense and measure the world in real time is something our planet has never seen before. From curing diseases to conserving precious resources such as water and energy, Big Data may well be the exact toolset we need to address many of the most pressing issues of our time,” he enthused.  To achieve this sort of result, the Human Face of Big Data project of course needs a large number of people to take part.  The next step is then to illustrate and communicate the data – i.e. to make sense of what has been garnered.  With this in mind, a book featuring photographs and written articles with graphics is also scheduled for publication on 20 November and a series of videos from the Mission Control presenters will be uploaded on the HumanFaceOfBigData.com site soon.

Mobile application to gather data

The project kicked off with the launch of a free mobile app on 25 September to encourage smartphone owners to volunteer to help “measure our world”.  The initial phase ended on 2 October when early results were presented at the Mission Control events.  The app is designed to harvest ‘passive’ data throughout the day, such as the distance you travel measured using a digital map.  More ‘active’ data is being collected by asking the volunteers direct questions about family, trust issues, sleep patterns, etc and also from uploaded photos. Then they get to see how their profile measures up.  “Once volunteers have contributed the basic data and completed their answers, they can use the app to go in search of their ‘data doppelganger’ -   individuals similar to them based on the answers provided,” explained Dave Menninger. He stressed that the information collected will be used for “non-commercial, educational purposes.” When the experiment closes on 20 November, the anonymised data will be made available so that it can be used as a basis for new ideas and improvements in a range of fields and sectors.
